invictus

This past summer, the movie District 9 saw great success in U.S. box offices. A sci-fi themed film by South-African born director Neill Blomkamp and produced by Lord of the Rings’ Peter Jackson, it offers an action-packed movie coupled with layers upon layers of social commentary based on South Africa’s history of racial and class segregation under apartheid rule.

District 9 is not the only cinematic highlight to come out of South Africa this year. As the country prepares to be the first African nation to host the World Cup, filmmakers have taken the opportunity to recount the unique power of international sporting events to unify diverse and often clashing populations in the upcoming film, Inviticus, due out December 11th.

Invictus tells the story of the 1995 Rugby World Cup held in South Africa, just a short while after the collapse of apartheid rule. The film stars Morgan Freeman as newly-appointed South African president Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar, the South African rugby captain as they team up to unite a divided nation.
